Antiques and Their Afterlives: Inside The Bone Museum

Inside The Bone Museum

In this special edition of Antiques and Their Afterlives, Ryan Matthew Cohn will take you on a virtual tour of The Bone Museum in Brooklyn!

Anatomical figures rendered in lifelike wax, prosthetic glass eyes peering up from medical trays, elaborate human hair wreaths memorializing the dearly departed. For Ryan and Regina Cohn, preserving these curious and often misunderstood objects is as much about honoring the past as learning from it.

This unique museum held a grand opening on October 31, 2023, when the McKibbin Lofts were transformed into a sprawling 1,000-square-foot showcase of human bones, marking the largest collection of its kind on the East Coast.

The Bone Museum offers a captivating journey through the intriguing history of medical osteology, an industry dedicated to studying, preserving, and increasing access to human bones, and an up-close educational experience with the museum’s extensive collection of bones ranging from spinal columns to complete skeletons. Visitors can explore exhibit cases, get an up-close look, and shed light on the evolution of bone-related sciences and practices.
